Waddle down to Wednesday Trivia at The Penguin in Charlotte

The Penguin Drive-In (https://thepenguindrivein.com ) isn't just a restaurant; it’s a Charlotte time capsule that refuses to quit. Originally opening in 1954 in Plaza Midwood, it became a certified local legend known for its counter-culture vibe and being featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. After a brief hiatus, it’s back and bigger than ever in its new Dilworth home, proving that some icons just can't be kept down.

Here is why this spot remains a heavyweight champion of the Queen City:

The Legend & The Vibe

Walking into the new Penguin feels like a high-fives-all-around reunion. They’ve managed to keep that "neighborhood soul" while adding the Iceberg Lounge—a cozy spot with big screens—and a massive, dog-friendly covered patio. It’s the kind of place where you can feel the 70-year history in the air, but the energy is purely modern.

The Food: Fried Pickles & "Tommy Boys"

If you come here and don't order the Famous Fried Pickles, did you even go? They are hand-battered, crispy, and served with a ranch that should probably be bottled.

  • Burgers: The Tommy Boy is a beast, loaded with bacon and homemade queso.

  • The French Dip: A sleeper hit made with thinly sliced roasted prime rib and served with white truffle parmesan fries.

  • The Drinks: From Spicy Margaritas to the "Pumpkin Smash Latte" (for the brave), the bar program is surprisingly sophisticated for a classic diner.

Arcade & Entertainment

One of the best upgrades in the new location is the 100% Free Arcade. It’s a genius move—kids (and nostalgic adults) can stay occupied for hours while the rest of the table catches up over a round of beers.

The New Wednesday Ritual: Trivia

The Penguin has officially joined the mid-week party circuit with Wednesday Night Trivia. Starting at 7:00 PM, the dining room transforms into a battleground of wits. It’s the perfect excuse to grab a Nashville Hot Chicken Wrap and see if your brain still works after a few local brews.

The Verdict: Whether you’re a lifelong Charlottean who remembers the original neon sign or a newcomer looking for the best burger in Dilworth, The Penguin is a must-visit. It’s rare for a "reboot" to live up to the original, but with the free games and the new trivia nights, The Penguin might actually be better than ever.
